Most art teachers I know struggle to find time for pursuing their own artwork.… so if that’s you, you’re not alone! Summertime provides a great opportunity for teachers to do things they otherwise set aside during the school year. But if we’re trying to teach our students how important art is, should we really be […]

Dense Text Lettering

My inspiration for this project came from the wonderful book, Hand Lettering, by Marci Donley & DeAnn Singh.  The authors call this technique “Writing Between the Lines”, but I think “Dense Text” describes it better.  I tried it with my middle schoolers and the results were fantastic!  You’ll find so many applications for this fun lettering […]

Thumbprint Self-Portrait

Here is another great idea I found on Pinterest.… You can see lots of inspiring examples here and here.  I tried this with my middle school students and they really had fun with it!  Here’s how we did it… Materials: Black stamp pad Copy paper  Black (F) and (UF) Sharpies Colored pencils Examples of the 3 types […]

Portfolio Project for Middle School — Graffiti Names

I chose to make my sample using my own name, so no one could complain about their name being too long! This year, my previously K-6 elementary school has added a middle school.  Now Art has become an elective class for 6th and 7th graders (an 8th grade will be added next year).  This means lots […]

Start the Year with Student Portfolios

I love to start the year by having my students decorate their portfolios!  You can make your own portfolios inexpensively, and safely store a whole year’s worth of artwork.   The first time I see each class at the beginning of the school year, I like to read them one of my favorite art-themed kids’ […]

Children’s Prayers for the World

I love this project that Barbara Mendence, a 2nd grade teacher at our school, does with her students each year!  Not only is this a fun art lesson, but it makes for a great geography lesson and culture study as well.  Armed with a list that includes all the countries of the world, her class […]
