I recently had the privilege of helping my adult daughter edit the manuscript for her first book. Her first real, published book. A book with an agent, a publisher, a release date (April 2017), and it’s own pre-order page on Amazon. A proud parenting milestone for sure! But this book of hers has been a long time in the making. While I love creating new art projects to keep things fresh and interesting, some of the older projects are just so good, they’re worth repeating year after year…. which also gives me the chance to keep improving them! Kaleidoscope Lettering is one of those projects! It uses the concepts of bilateral (reflective) symmetry, tessellation, and positive/negative space to transform names, initials, or inspiring words into unique […] ]]>

The Thanksgiving holiday seems to bring out the best in people, as we focus on family, friends, serving others, and gratefulness. Sharing what we’re thankful for is central to our Thanksgiving tradition, and to this project sponsored by Elmer’s! Gratefulness Rocks are a fun way for the whole family to share what’s most important while creating […] ]]>

Feed Your Creative Soul – with a Sketchbook! http://www.teachkidsart.net/feed-your-creative-soul-with-a-sketchbook/ http://www.teachkidsart.net/feed-your-creative-soul-with-a-sketchbook/#comments Fri, 19 Jul 2013 21:36:43 +0000 http://www.teachkidsart.net/?p=1938

Most art teachers I know struggle to find time for pursuing their own artwork…. so if that’s you, you’re not alone! Summertime provides a great opportunity for teachers to do things they otherwise set aside during the school year. But if we’re trying to teach our students how important art is, should we really be […] ]]>

Dense Text Lettering http://www.teachkidsart.net/dense-text-lettering/ http://www.teachkidsart.net/dense-text-lettering/#comments Wed, 14 Nov 2012 05:57:58 +0000 http://www.teachkidsart.net/?p=1499

My inspiration for this project came from the wonderful book, Hand Lettering, by Marci Donley & DeAnn Singh. The authors call this technique “Writing Between the Lines”, but I think “Dense Text” describes it better. I tried it with my middle schoolers and the results were fantastic! You’ll find so many applications for this fun lettering […] ]]>

Here’s a great idea I found on Pinterest…. You can see lots of inspiring examples here and here. I tried this lesson with my middle school students and they really had fun with it! For more detailed instructions with photos, tips, writing prompts, a student gallery, and fascinating fingerprint facts, check out my pdf on […] ]]>

4th grade “JOY” by Jacob For our school-wide Thanksgiving project, we decided to show our thanks to some very special people… My K through 7th grade students have been busy making Christmas cards for Veterans, to spread some Christmas cheer and let these men and women know they are loved and appreciated! The hundreds of […] ]]>

Portfolio Project for Middle School – Graffiti Names http://www.teachkidsart.net/portfolio-project-for-middle-school-art/ http://www.teachkidsart.net/portfolio-project-for-middle-school-art/#comments Sun, 04 Sep 2011 01:01:00 +0000 http://biz123.inmotionhosting.com/~teachk5/2011/09/portfolio-project-for-middle-school-art.html

I chose to make my sample using my own name, so no one could complain about their name being too long! This year, my previously K-6 elementary school has added a middle school. Now Art has become an elective class for 6th and 7th graders (an 8th grade will be added next year). This means […] ]]>

I love to start the year by having my students decorate their portfolios! You can make your own portfolios inexpensively, and safely store a whole year’s worth of artwork. The first time I see each class at the beginning of the school year, I like to read them one of my favorite art-themed kids’ […] ]]>

I love this project that Barbara Mendence, a 2nd grade teacher at our school, does with her students each year! Not only is this a fun art lesson, but it makes for a great geography lesson and culture study as well. Armed with a list that includes all the countries of the world, her class […] ]]>
