Art Speak 101

Tempera paint, colored pencils and markers are examples of art “media”.

Do you ever feel confused (or maybe even intimidated?) by some of the lingo used in the Art world?? We do have some terms that are specific to our industry and could be unfamiliar to someone without a background in Art. I’ll try to offer some insight on some of these lesser known terms that you may run into in the process of teaching Art to kids….

Here are two words that are commonly misused when talking about Art materials: media and medium. What’s the difference?? Tempera paint, colored pencils and markers, when referenced together would be called media…. as in, “Several kinds of media will be included in the show.” But, the singular term for each of these is medium…. as in, “Which medium do you like best?” The medium is the material from which any art object is made, but if you’re talking about more than one medium, you would say media. The term mixed-media or multimedia refers to more than one medium used in the same piece of art.

Still confused?? Remember, you can always go to Meriam-Webster’s Online Dictionary and get not only definitions, but in the case of those really unusual words, you can learn how to pronounce them as well!
