Underwater Fantasy inspired by Paul Klee

By Cheryl Trowbridge 8 Comments

Swiss painter and graphic artist, Paul Klee, is known for his child-like use of line and color.... maybe that's why kids relate so well to his work!  The influence of Surrealism, Expressionism, and Cubism is easily seen in his art, yet he really had a style all his own.  This project is inspired by his painting, "Fish Magic", where he combines traditional underwater imagery … [Read more...]

Self-Portraits Inspired by Grant Wood

By Cheryl Trowbridge 2 Comments

Grant Wood (1891-1942) was an American artist best known for his paintings of rural American life.  My students were fascinated by the story of how his father died when Grant was only ten years old, and his mother had to move her family from their home on the farm to the big city. This was a hard move for Grant, who missed his farm animals and his life in the country. … [Read more...]

Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss!

By Cheryl Trowbridge 15 Comments

Dr. Seuss-inspired creature by Kindergartener

On March 2nd we celebrate a very special birthday in our Kindergarten classes... that of beloved children's author/illustrator, Theodor Seuss Geisel, aka "Dr. Seuss". In his lifetime, Dr. Seuss published over 40 children's books which have inspired and motivated the reading skills and imaginations of generations of children. The birthday of Dr. Seuss was appropriately chosen … [Read more...]

Cezanne-Inspired Still Life – a Step Further!

By Cheryl Trowbridge 7 Comments

I was so happy with the results that my Kinders had with our Cezanne-inspired still life paintings, that I wanted to take it a step further with my 1st grade classes....  As I showed my 1st graders some of Cezanne's still life paintings, we noticed that you could often see a dark edge around many of his shapes.  So, this time after we finished "hiding the white paper" we used … [Read more...]

Cezanne-Inspired Still Life for K and Beyond

By Cheryl Trowbridge 6 Comments

Today my Kinders learned about Impressionist artist Paul Cezanne, and painted a still life inspired by him.  This lesson was so successful on so many levels!  First, we talked about how Cezanne's father didn't encourage him in his art (he wanted him to be a banker or a lawyer), but he had a friend named Emil Zola who encouraged him to keep painting.  Emil was a writer so the … [Read more...]

“Day of the Dead Prints” inspired by Jose Posada

By Cheryl Trowbridge 10 Comments

We had a blast at my Teach Kids Art: "Day of the Dead" workshop yesterday!  I added a new project this year, "Day of the Dead Prints" - inspired by Jose Posada.  Jose Posada (1852-1913) was a prolific Mexican folk artist and political satirist from Aguascallientes in central Mexico.  Posada began learning lithography (a form of printmaking using a metal plate) at age 16. … [Read more...]

Portfolio Project for Middle School – Graffiti Names

By Cheryl Trowbridge 7 Comments

I chose to make my sample using my own name, so no one could complain about their name being too long! This year, my previously K-6 elementary school has added a middle school.  Now Art has become an elective class for 6th and 7th graders (an 8th grade will be added next year).  This means lots of new lesson plans geared to older kids!  I wanted to give my middle … [Read more...]

Line Designs with Shading

By Cheryl Trowbridge 35 Comments

I'm not really sure what to call these drawings, but my students love them!  I found this project on Art with Mr. E. (and added to his instructions just a bit) to use with my 4th & 5th graders for some end-of-the-year fun!!     With this project, you can teach that shading and careful use of line can give a 2D drawing the "illusion" of being 3D.  I loved the … [Read more...]

Keith Haring “Action Figures”

By Cheryl Trowbridge 10 Comments

I found my inspiration for this lesson at Deep Space Sparkle.  It's the end of the school year, and while this project looks fantastic on regular white paper, I needed to go a step further to really grab my 6th graders' attention!  So, I created my sample on aluminum foil with colorful Sharpies.  The result.... my students said this was their favorite art project this … [Read more...]
