How Van Gogh Made His Mark – Explore and Learn!
The Courtyard of the Hospital in Arles, First Week of May 1889
by Vincent Van Gogh
If you are a fan of Vincent Van Gogh, you must visit this wonderful, interactive website for kids by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, called “Explore and Learn” . Here kids can learn about the life of post-impressionist artist Vincent Van Gogh, focusing on his drawings and his masterful use of line. Then they can try their hand (be sure you try it, too…. it’s FUN!) with “Make Your Mark”, using different sizes of “quill pens” to sketch their own scene and even print it out when they’re finished. Warning: This is addicting!!
While the Van Gogh page happens to be my personal favorite, this site offers material on a variety of other artists such as Edgar Degas, Mary Cassat, Romare Bearden, and more
. You will also find a helpful timeline of Art History, information on themes and cultures, and a “Daily Artwork Archive” where a different object from the Met’s collection is featured each day. Have fun “exploring and learning” with the Met!
